The Paleo Diet…What is it?

The Paleo Diet is a return to our ancestral roots as human beings.  That’s right – think caveman.  Think hunter-gatherer.  No agricultural sciences.  No manufacturing. No packaging.  No trucks.

More importantly, no obesity.  No heart disease.  No calorie counting.

First implemented (re-implemented?) in 1975, the Paleo diet consists of lean proteins such as meats, fish, poultry, and nuts. It also is marked by veggies and fruits – rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. No grains or pastas.  No transfats.  No preservatives.

In a nutshell (pun intended?), the Paleo diet marries the biological make-up of the human body (organs, tissues, circulatory system) with foods that match most naturally and most perfectly. After-all, why would you put milk in your car’s gas tank? Not only would your car not run smoothly, but, it would undoubtedly lead to a host of new issues in your engine and beyond.  The Paleo diet identifies and meets the actual needs of the human body with corresponding foods.  Au naturale!

Scientists acknowledge a myriad of benefits that come with the diet, including weight loss, improved lipids, and healthy insulin levels. Heart disease is thwarted. Diabetes and the effects of diabetes are diminished.

Dieters point not only to the benefits of primal eating, but also to the ease…easy shopping, cooking and planning.  No more crazy, unsustainable dieting. The diet itself is simple.  Simple enough for a caveman.

If we can’t reinvent the wheel, why reinvent the menu?
